I am offering Bainbridge Island Baseball and Softball teams a 15% discount if they book/pay for a game by April 10th, 2011.

Our son Benjamin has played in the league since T-Ball and just completed his first year in AA. I would like to offer the league, the players and the families an alternative photographic experience than what is currently offered based on feedback and wishes from coaches and parents.

Existing issues:

Photographs are “posed” and do not look natural.
Parents want the digital images for personal websites, email, etc.
Parents want more variety than one photograph of the team and one individual photograph.
Parents have a hard time justifying the overall price based on the perceived value.

I am proposing to photograph a team playing for one entire game for a flat fee of $200/team. This will include a set of team photographs with the name of the team and the year, as well as all the color corrected images to download.

Here are my current sports photography rates and services:

I am available to photograph Bainbridge Island Soccer and Baseball each teams during one entire game during the 2011 season for a flat fee of $200/team. This will include the followinga set of team photographs with the name of the team and the year.

Photographing the players during an actual game.

Publish all professionally, color corrected, high resolution images to a custom website for online viewing

A formal team photograph

Each team player will receive 5 or more individual photographs.

Update re: Bainbridge Islander coverage in Dec 19th, 2009 issue

In September, 2009 I submitted the following photograph to the staff at the Bainbridge-Islander newspaper for an issue cover.

On December 19th the newspaper published the photograph in the This Week section with the following caption:

Slice of Island Life | Island resident David W. Cohen publishes an annual book as part of a fundraising project for Bainbridge Youth Services. He's hoping to include this image of the Strom family mailboxes on West Port Madison Road in the 2010 edition. The current 2009 edition, "Standing Here," is currently on sale exclusively at Eagel Harbor Book Co. Cohen hosts an open house at his home/studio. For more information, see his blog at....

Since submitting the photograph in September I am sorry to report that due to the slow sales of the 2009 book, we will not be publishing another book. It is a shame.

Battle Point Park families & their dogs portrait photo event

On Saturday October 10th from 1:30 PM — 2:30 PM I will be taking B&W portrait photographs of families and their dogs at the old wooden carved bench located at the north end of the duck pond at Battle Point Park. The portraits will be posted online so that islanders can vote on their TOP 5 to be possibly included in the 2010 BYS Book Project. The voting takes place online on my blog at the beginning of each month.

I believe it is best to review the weather forecasting as we get closer to event date. Therefore, I will communicate via my blog any weather related changes to the date and/or time.

Please post comments or questions. I hope to see a good turn out to this public portrait photography event. I am certainly looking forward to it.

New round of Skateboard Park photos for BYS 2010 project

Hello folks:
This past Friday afternoon I went to Strawberry Hill Skateboard Park with my son Benjamin to photograph boarders, skaters and bike riders in action. It was a small but really talented group of kids. The late afternoon light was awesome and created wonderful, natural shadows and highlights.

Starting October 5th, the community can begin voting on their TOP 5 photographs from the month of September. How cool is that?

Morning fog on the way to Seattle

Well, we caught the 7:05 AM ferry this morning on our way to the regatta. The fog at the ferry terminal was lingering offshore. I was hoping to get more of the guy in the small boat between the lamp post on the pier and the docked ferry. Oh well, next time!

Note: I will add this to the 2010 BYS project folder for Sept.

Despite the early rise and swapping lenses in the car on the car deck en-route to SEA, arrived at Gas Works park to realize I was basically late and out of position to shoot the rowers during the race—even with the 400 mm. I did get some shots of rowers as they passed by after crossing the finish line, but I imagine not the same as in the heat of the race. I am trying to workout an opportunity to shoot a practice this week with the 10-day forecast looking so awesome.

In the meantime, all the best and thanks to all the folks I met at The Taste Of Lynwood. I sold 21 copies of the book, "Standing Here." That is very cool!

Additionally, there is parking north of my neighbor along Ferncliff Ave on the right and on High School Rd. heading East (toward SEA).

Additional 2010 BYS Book project process points

Overview of the editorial & production process:

We are a very lean but talented team. Erin Kellogg is our Editor. This year we plan to take advantage of starting the project early in order to ensure content, page designs and pages come together in a timely manner. The photo series concept will allow us to work on smaller "chunks" as opposed to all at once and on deadline—yes printing presses have deadlines!

Once we receive your written copy via e-mail then the following will happen:

I will layout the copy using the latest version of the project page design
I will send the author and Erin 2-page PDF containing the photo assignment and the poem or prose
Erin will begin to correspond with you over e-mail or phone about minor edits
We'll review the content and make possible design modifications
All edits will be incorporated into a new 2-page PDF which will requires approved by all parties

Ideally, this should be a process that is completed within 1-2 weeks.

Engaging the community:
There are a number of creative opportunities to actively engage the Bainbridge Island community with various aspects of the project.

For example, as I post a new series of images, I will ask the community members subscribing to the project blog to review the photographs and select their top 5 images. All votes will be entered as blog comments so that we can tally them and post the results for the top 5 images from each series.

Next, the top 5 images from each series will be submitted to the contributing authors so that they can request a photo assignment. Once an author requests a photo I will update the blog and the project portfolio to reflect the new writer assignment.

Please follow these simple steps to properly record your votes:

On my public website, navigate to an image you want to include in your top 5 and write down the red image title (under image info)
Repeat step 1 for all 5 images you want included in your vote and post your results as a comment on the blog.

Today is the official launch of the 2010 Bainbridge Youth Services (BYS) fundraising book project. The book is a collection of my local photographs accompanied by poems and short pieces of prose written by local authors.

Note: Click on the blog title and your browser will be redirected to a new BYS Book Project portfolio containing a handful of initial images—landscapes, portraits and still lifes on my public website.

Background project and BYS information:

In December 2008 I met Lori Midthun—executive director of Bainbridge Youth Services. This chance meeting on the ferry has evolved into a wonderful, local, annual fundraising project of which I am very proud to be a part.

For almost 50 years, BYS has offered a listening ear to the Island’s teens—providing free, confidential mental health counseling to students between the ages of 12 and 19. There is a myth that with wealth comes wellness. Our teens are under a great deal of pressure to succeed and excel, and many do, but BYS is available for those who need to admit their fears, or concerns or failures in a safe place.

It's very clear that BYS is experiencing increased demand for its counseling services at the same time that the City of Bainbridge is cutting its public funding.

The 2009 book, "Standing Here" grew as a creative way to raise money directly for BYS in order to address this budget shortfall. The book, published in May 2009, is currently available at Eagle Harbor Book Company. It has the potential to raise over $15,000, and if you have not already picked up a copy, please do buy one. The book is selling for $20 and 80% of the sales proceeds go directly to BYS—a very generous gift from the folks at EHBC! I hope you enjoy the 2009 copy of the book. It is a gift to you from a small group of your neighbors. It is also an opportunity for you to give a gift in return to BYS to fund counseling for our youth.

Coming Sept 16th: Photography Open House

I am hosting the first of a series of photography open houses for Island Moms on Wednesday September 16th from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. I will share with you samples of my portrait work—both individual children and families. We'll discuss my rates, services, referral incentive programs, products and my basic approach to capturing real and natural moments.

During the open house, I will provide tea, coffee and home made bread while you visit my home/studio—located at 8034 Ferncliff Avenue NE. This is the gray house on the NE corner of High School Rd. and Ferncliff Avenue.

Thank you for visiting my new photography blog.

In December 2008 I ended a 20 year career at Adobe Systems in order to start a new chapter, so to speak. It was time to slow down, get grounded and establish a new set of priorities.

I also wanted to make time to give something unique and meaningful to the community of Bainbridge Island, WA. I published a book to raise money for Bainbridge Youth Services. The book is titled, "Standing Here." The book is available for sale at Eagle Harbor Book Company on Winslow Way.

STANDING HERE: A GIFT TO BAINBRIDGE YOUTH SERVICES

Bainbridge's David Cohen unveils a fusion of photography with text, a book having local roots and a great heart and cause. Beautiful and thought-provoking, Standing Here juxtaposes Cohen's black and white photographic images of Bainbridge—still lifes, portraits and landscapes in a variety of moods—with text by Bainbridge Islanders including some high school students. The project directly benefits our community with a goal of raising funds to provide over 330 hours of free mental health counseling for Bainbridge students from 12 to 19 years of age.
